Naseem Badie is writer, director and actor, living in Oakland, California.
From 2011-June 2017, Naseem was an Assistant Professor of Global Studies at CSU Monterey Bay. During that time, she published an academic book, several articles, and essays. Her scholarship focuses on post-conflict reconstruction and humanitarian action. In the course of her research she has spent months living in a squatter settlement in Juba, South Sudan.
Since 2015, she has been the director of the Iran/American Storytelling and Oral History project. The project received a California Humanities Community Stories grant in 2016, which supported her film, The Sky is the Same Color.
In her writing, Naseem examines the experiences of young women who find themselves between worlds, whether due to globalization, cultural intersection, or personal crisis. In summer 2017, Naseem participated in Theater Bay Area’s ATLAS program, which supported her transition into a career as a playwright and director. Her play, Vozara, was staged at the Berkeley Repertory School of Theater in August 2017. In August, she also completed a short play, Backpackers, which was produced by the 51st Street Theater Company. Her next play, Juba Hotel, is set in a tent hotel in Southern Sudan.
As an actor, Naseem has featured in film installations, music videos, short films, web commercials, and industrial films. She is currently a company member of 51st Street Theater in Oakland.
At the beginning of her career, Naseem was a video artist. She has exhibited her video installations at galleries in San Francisco and Oakland.
Naseem holds a PhD from the University of Oxford, a BFA from San Francisco Art Institute, and a BA from UC Berkeley.
